Aberdeen Food Guide: Uncover the Best of Local Hong Kong Cuisine
Aberdeen Food Guide| 1. Aberdeen Noodle Boat, Lau Kee
The boat noodles in Hong Kong are almost extinct, with only two boats remaining in the whole city, one of which is “Lau Kee Boat Noodles”. Lau Kee Boat Noodles mainly serve roasted meats with noodles. The soup base is always made from dried fish to create a seafood broth that is fresh, sweet, salty, and fragrant. It’s not considered strong-flavored but has a taste that cannot be found elsewhere. The roasted meats are sourced from Aberdeen in Hong Kong, while the oil chicken is soaked by Uncle Lau himself. They offer roast duck, oil chicken, and char siu as options for the roasted meats and hor fun (wide rice noodles), lai fun (thick rice noodles), and mi fen (rice vermicelli) for the noodles. Customers can choose single or double combinations of roasted meats according to their preference, but Uncle Lau may also add extra ingredients according to his mood. Even if you only order roast duck, you might still see him adding some oil chicken and char siu!

Aberdeen Food Guide| 2. Sik Kee Restaurant
Nine out of ten residents in Hong Kong would recommend this affordable small shop. The shop is small but specializes in homemade fish and meat, served with lettuce and faux shark fin soup. It’s incredibly filling! Adding vinegar enhances the flavor even more. The fish meat is tender and chewy, while the shark fin soup is fresh and sweet. Additionally, they also sell fried oil cakes that are rarely seen elsewhere. They are large in size and filled with savory radish shreds. Another highly recommended dish is the extra-large fried chicken thigh, which is deep-fried upon ordering. Although the texture of the meat may not be particularly tender or juicy, it stands out for its thin crispy skin and generous portion size.

Aberdeen Food Guide| 3. Chan Sun Kee
Ap Lei Chau Market hides an old-fashioned tea restaurant. In addition to serving Hong Kong-style noodles and stir-fries, its signature dishes, including diced French toast and fried trio treasures, attract many visitors. The former cuts the French toast into dice-like pieces and adds condensed milk and peanut butter, creating a sinful combination. The latter consists of fried fish skin, fried shrimp dumplings, and fish head slices as the signature trio treasures.

Aberdeen Food Guide| 4. Chau Ka Yuen Herbal Tea
The store opened before 1960 and is one of the well-known traditional herbal tea shops in Hong Kong. In the early years, it operated as a stall in Tsuen Wan, but later moved to the Yau Ma Tei area in the 90s. The storefront is different from modern herbal tea shops today, still retaining its old-fashioned decoration layout, as if time has stopped in the 1960s. In hot summer days, the reporter recommends drinking snow pear tea to cool down and relieve heat. It’s excellent for reducing internal body heat! Another specialty of this small shop is their tea eggs, with a sign that says “a once-in-a-lifetime encounter, an unforgettable experience.” Everyone can personally try it out to see if it lives up to its reputation!
