The Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens (HKZBG) is the oldest public gardens in Hong Kong, established in 1871. It was renamed in 1975 to reflect its increased focus on zoological exhibits. The gardens cover an area of 5.6 hectares and consist of two parts – the Old Garden and the New Garden. The HKZBG aims to conserve endangered animal and plant species while also offering visitors a chance to explore historical features such as stone pillars, memorials, statues, pavilions, entrance gate pillars, steps leading to fountains.

The Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens has a longstanding tradition of exhibiting wild animals, dating back to 1876. During those early years, a small number of birds and mammals were kept in primitive structures, primarily for the purpose of entertainment.
However, a significant shift occurred in the mid-1970s when the Gardens underwent a substantial expansion. The focus then shifted towards the advancement of techniques in captive breeding and conservation breeding programs. Today, our mission has evolved to guide our zoological collection activities, with two key objectives in mind:
(a) To cultivate understanding and appreciation for all living beings through education, conservation, and exhibition.
(b) To foster an appreciation for the interconnectedness and interdependence of nature.
At present, approximately half of the Gardens’ sprawling land is dedicated to housing our captivating zoological exhibits. Within about 40 enclosures, we provide a home for around 180 birds, 80 mammals, and 25 reptiles. We take great pride in maintaining a diverse and well-cared-for collection, contributing to the conservation efforts and public awareness of the remarkable creatures we share our planet with.

The Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens is home to over 1000 species of plants, including tropical and sub-tropical varieties. Notable specimens include Conifers, Figs, Palms, Gum Trees, Magnolias, Camellias, Azaleas, Philodendrons, Dawn Redwoods and Yellow Camellias. Fragrant Roses and Orange-jessamine add to the sensory experience. The Herb Garden offers culinary and medicinal herbs while the Fountain Terrace Garden showcases colorful shrubs. The Greenhouse houses over 150 native and exotic species including orchids and ferns. Visit this enchanting garden for a unique botanical journey.
